The adoption of the speak bubble as cliché is intriguing. The image is an elegant shorthand for speech, derived from the popular form of comics. It’s use in graphic design is meant to connote conversation or the spoken word. But most often, it’s employed as seen here — as a single, empty bubble. Which – in the language of comics – would signify a one-sided conversation where nothing is said.
